Nestled in the heart of the Hunter Valley is a small historic town, perfect for a weekend getaway.

Wollombi is a quieter town situated in the Hunter Valley and is mostly a 30-minute drive to major towns and attractions in the Valley. The town is best known for its European settlement, however, the land was and still is a significant meeting point for coastal Aboriginal people.

How to get to Wollombi

The only way you can get to Wollombi is by car as there is no public transport in the town. From Sydney, the drive is 2 hours while Newcastle is a little closer with an hour and a half drive. As you make your way to Wollombi, you will weave your way through the lush Hunter Valley region and vineyards.

Things to do

  • Aboriginal cultural sites

Wollombi is an important ceremonial meeting place for Aboriginal people, with over 300 sites dating back over 13,000 years. Many of these sites are in Yengo National Park and other surrounding areas.

  • Wineries

With Wollombi being in a wine region, there are plenty to visit, with some vineyards producing wines since the 1850s! There are small boutique wineries in Wollombi, they’re still worth checking out and tasting the fine wines.

  • Historical Wollombi Village Walk

Take part in the self-guided Wollombi Village Walk and get to know the history of the town. The walk starts at The Obelisk and takes you through almost 30 different points, ending at Wollombi Tavern. Along the walk, you will stop at a few places including Cunneens Bridge, ANZAC Reserve, Wollombi Cottage, and churches.

  • Sculpture in the Vineyard

The Sculpture in the Vineyard is New South Wales’s longest-running sculpture festival! The Wollombi Valley Sculpture Festival runs every 2 years and features over 150 sculptures by award-winning sculptors.

  • Wollombi Endeavour Museum

The Wollombi Endeavour Museum displays local history dating to the 1800s. The building was built in 1866 and operated as a Court House until 1951 which then was used as a Police Station and Community Hall until 1970.

  • Wollombi Markets

Each Monday that takes place over a long weekend (Easter, June, and October), you have the Wollombi Markets being held. There are over 100 stalls selling a range of items including crafts, fashion, local produce, and so much more.
